Ancient History Students’ Close Encounter with Mummies
Date: July 30, 2018
Recently our Year 11 and 12 Ancient History class visited the Brisbane museum to view the Egyptian Mummies: Exploring Ancient Lives exhibition.
The exhibition, on loan from the British museum, gave our students the opportunity to meet six mummies and unlock the secrets behind their wrappings using the latest CT scanning technology. We discovered how they were embalmed and what life along the Nile valley was like.
We also explored visualisations, based on the CT scans of ancient texts, coffins, masks and funerary objects to unravel their mysteries.
Standing next to 2500 year old mummies was a humbling and awe inspiring experience. Reading the stories of their daily lives helped us understand what life was like in ancient times and was great preparation for our unit on Ancient Egypt this term.
