Support-A-Reader Seminar

We are pleased to invite you to participate in our Support-A-Reader training program to be presented by our Primary Learning Support Coordinator, Mrs Jo Barrett.

When: Thursday 1 March
Time: 8:45am – 12:00pm
Please note: 8:45am-10:30am is a repeat of the session held at Parent Information Night. If you attended on that night, you are welcome to join us
from 10:30am for the practical training session where we will model and practice the strategies we have learned.
Where: Primary Enrichment Centre, I Block

This FREE training is highly recommended for any parent of a Junior Primary age (or younger) child, who wishes to learn how best to assist their child to read. Morning tea is provided.

Learning to read is quite a complex operation. To assist with home reading, it is desirable to follow the strategies that are used in our College for the best possible outcomes for your child. This valuable seminar will enable you to understand the processes required for a child to learn how to read and apply strategies to assist in their success.

Training is essential for all parents who would like to volunteer in reading in the classroom or as a Support-A-Reader (SAR) tutor. It is highly recommended that all Year 1 and Prep parents attend this workshop. Please phone Primary Reception on 5451 3652 to register.

We are always seeking volunteers in our SAR program which has been operating at Suncoast Christian College since 1994. We have achieved excellent outcomes as a direct result of many parents and grandparents giving their time to support students who are having some difficulties with reading. Parents or grandparents are trained as tutors, to hear students read for 10-15 minutes each session. We have found that every year, not only are the students blessed, but tutors are also blessed as they follow the progress of each child and build friendships.
