The Hamper Task

Archives

After watching the documentary series, War on Waste which highlighted the amount of food that is wasted and the huge amount of rubbish being sent to landfill, students were given a task which focused on food preservation methods. The hamper task was given to students to have them think differently about food wastage and food preservation and to become part of the solution for better use of natural resources.

The class was required to research, investigate, then select suitable recipes that enabled them to produce five different preserved food products. Being Term 4 and so close to Christmas, these products were designed and presented as a small gift hamper for family celebrations at this special time. Students produced strawberry jam, lemon butter, shortbread, pickles and chutneys, and dehydrated fruit.

Each hamper looked fabulous with cane baskets or boxes decorated with tinsel and ribbon, full of yummy looking preserves. Students loved this task and were keen to do more.
