Students Rose to the Challenge in Debating Competition
Date: September 12, 2017
Suncoast has had a successful debating season with the involvement of 21 students across Years 6 – 12. Students rose to the challenge of presenting a researched, well-reasoned argument with clarity and confidence for four consecutive weeks.
Debating requires the development of great life skills including teamwork, listening and synthesizing information, critical thinking, structuring and organizing thoughts and presenting with poise and conviction often in a time-pressure situation. All Intermediate and Senior debates were short prep; prepared in the hour immediately prior to delivery and the Junior division engaged in this model for their final round 4 debate. All teams made great progress in the development of their skills as a result of engaging in this competition.
Special congratulations must go to our Intermediate Team comprising Angela Deighton, Louisa Finau, Bonnie Johnston, Aliah Lawson, Olivia Renkovetsky, Bella Wood and their coach Mrs Trotter who won all of their debates in the preliminary rounds. A further win in the playoffs last Wednesday evening saw them secure a place in the semi-finals next term.
A particular thank you to our coaches Mrs Blakeston, Mrs Jones, Mrs Trotter, Mrs Camilleri, Mrs Barrett and Ms Mitchell, as well as parent Dr Pene Mitchell who stepped in to coach one of our teams to a win in the final round of competition.
