The theme of Reconciliation Week 2021: “More Than Words” was a perfect fit for both our ambition and approach to reconciliation with First Nations people.
Our community enjoyed a day of celebration and cultural awareness which included yarns from local Indigenous guest, our Indigenous Leaders and Mrs Bindi Brien as she recalls the story of the painting that has been gifted to Suncoast Christian College by a local indigenous artist.
As part of the celebrations, our Community attended a whole school assembly. Students were encouraged that reconciliation is #morethanaword – rather it’s a call to action. Local Gubbi Gubbi man, Kerry Neill, shared fabulous yarns and some simple, practical steps to show kindness to others. Students learnt more about Indigenous culture; enjoying didgeridoo, bunya nut games, weaving, damper-honey, and the Koorie game Marngrook (‘ball game”) – thought to be a forerunner of Australian Rules Football.
